As a patient of this for nearly 16 years, (plus being on TV), I perhaps get a bit of special treatment at his office. George Martin is not only the allergy guy-he’s my main doctor. I was going to get my weekly allergy shot at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, Pa., around noon. We arrived back home Sunday afternoon, after spending a few days in South Florida. There were no further incidents that were significant enough to become more concerned. But that is when I decided to contact my doctor when I got back home, just to make sure everything was OK. “Am I that out of shape?” Unlike with the pool, I continued anyway, and actually felt better at the end of the walk. This time, though, I started feeling a bit out of breath only a few minutes after starting. We can usually walk miles with no problem, and had in fact done that just a couple of days earlier. Phyllis and I take a walk on the beautiful beach. If I had continued for the full swim, it turns out I may not have survived the pool. It certainly couldn’t be described as pain, so I didn’t think it was anything serious. I generally swim an un-interrupted 20 minutes of breast stroke 2-3 times a week back home.īut after only a couple of laps, there was a “pressure” that I felt above the heart. Swimming is a great exercise-terrific for aerobics, but no impact (unlike running). I take a swim in the resort’s private pool, where I can do my laps. It’s a destination wedding for a close friend of my girlfriend Phyllis. We leave for the beautiful Riviera Maya in Mexico, south of Cancun. I also played on the station’s softball team for years, and was one of their best hitters and fastest runners, even approaching age 50. In fact, the Penn State football players used r’ball as part of their off-season conditioning program at the time I went to school there. Racquetball requires lots of quick movements, and is a great conditioning exercise. I may not look like it (OK, I definitely don’t look like it), but I’m a pretty good athlete, who’s been playing racquetball for nearly 40 years, and even won a couple of tournaments. Why should there be any problems? I have never smoked, never been obese, ate at least decently, and exercised regularly, including swimming. He put me on two blood pressure medications, and my numbers have been good ever since. I did go to the doctor, George Martin, at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, Pa., who treats a lot of people from the station. “You need to see a doctor immediately.” Isn’t live TV wonderful? I can just imagine the shocked look on my face. When we came back from the commercial break, just before starting the weather, I turned to one of the nurses and asked how I did. “I’ll be back with the weather, and we’ll see how my blood pressure is, coming up.” Good TV. I went to the blood pressure station and had them hook me up. In order to make things more interesting, I did my “tease” for weather while walking around, showing some of the great exhibits. My assignment was to do the weather from there, while promoting the event. I was at the Convention Center on a Saturday, helping to promote NBC10’s “FitFest”- a weekend full of free health screenings, and more. The first time I found out about having high blood pressure was in the late 90s.
